Ignition Change

Ignition switches are the main component of your car's starting and charging systems. They activate these systems when a key is inserted. They also supply the power to other electronic components. The vehicle might not operate or start if the ignition switch is damaged. You can purchase a new ignition switch from a dealer or repair shop, or you can try to replace it yourself. It's a challenging task but you should consult the owner's or service manual for your specific model for instructions.

To prevent electrocuting or damaging electrical components in your car, you should disconnect the battery. Based on the model the ignition switch could be bolted or have lock tabs that you have to press. Follow your repair manual to remove the dash cover and access the ignition cylinder. Install the new cylinder wafer instead of the old one. Reassemble the steering wheel, dash, and connect the battery.

If your car's ignition doesn't move, make sure the transmission is in Park. Also, try a different key to see if it will activate the starter. You can get an additional fob, but it has to be activated and programmed in your car to work.

In the past, losing your car keys wasn't an issue because you could easily find a spare key and store it safely. The lock for the car door consists of a button visible on the key fob which is connected to an actuator in the door. The actuator moves an iron rod to move a lever inside the door.
