Double Glazed Windows Repairs

Over time, your double-glazed windows will start to exhibit signs that they require repair. It could be a draught coming through the window, misting or condensation between the windows and broken glass.

These issues can be solved without replacing your entire window unit, and save money on your energy bills.

Broken Panes

A ball thrown by your children or a stray piece of sand from your lawnmowers or a mishap at work can cause cracks to appear in the double-glazed windows you have. Double glazing differs from single-paned windows since it has an airtight gas seal between the two panes. If a glass pane that has been broken creates a gap within your frame, you'll have to replace it.

In a couple of easy steps, you can set up an entirely new window pane. The old glass as well as the wood surrounding it must be removed. The new pane must be positioned into the frame opening and pressed down using silicone caulk.

The gap in the frame is then filled with window putty which can be spread around with a putty knife and smoothed using a second putty knife. Window putty can also be used as an adhesive, helping to hold the new window to the frame. If the wood moldings on your double-glazed windows are painted, you'll need to use the chisel to get rid of the varnish or paint.

Make sure you wear thick gloves when working with glass prior installing the new window. After that, using a utility knife, scrape off the remaining window glass and take measurements of the opening of the new window. With a wood frame, remove 1/16 of an inch from each measurement to allow for expansion and contraction of the wooden frame. The same procedure is to be followed for metal frames to ensure a tight fit of the glass replacement.

It is possible that seals between glass panes may also become faulty during the repair of double-glazed. This could cause condensation or a misty gap. A technician can resolve this issue by drilling tiny holes into the frame to expel any moisture. The technician could then pipe hot air into the frame to dry the gap and seal it again.

While you can fix double-glazed windows on your own, it is usually best to hire an expert handle the task. Special tools are needed to take out and install the new glass, and the task should be performed by a qualified expert to avoid potential injuries.

Foggy Windows

The window seal (also known as the gasket on the window) is responsible to seal air between the two panes of glass in your double glazing and prevents drafts, noise and moisture. But over time, this window seal can perish or shrink. This happens because of natural expansion and contraction as the window goes through various temperatures and weather conditions throughout the year.

Foggy windows are a sign that the air-tight seal between the two panes of the window is failing. This allows humidity from outside to get in and condense between the glass panes creating an appearance of frosted, wet that is difficult to clean.

You can fix the problem without having to remove double-glazing. One option is to 'defog' the window in place by drilling tiny holes and injecting a cleansing solution between the glass panes. This is however a short-term fix as the solution only removes the fog, but it does not replace the gas inert between the glass and restore the energy efficiency that could have been lost due to the deterioration of seals.

Another option is to replace your glass with an insulated glass unit (IGU). This will provide you with clean, fresh and fog-free windows, as well as returning any energy efficiency lost. This is more expensive than simply fixing the IGU, but it's a more permanent solution.

There is also the chance that the wood frame of your door or window may be rotting and need to be replaced. This is a costly repair however, it will give you a fresh start and prevent more moisture from getting into your home. It is best to hire an expert to evaluate the damage to your window before you begin any repairs to double glazing. They will be able to provide you with a quote and provide you with advice about the options available. They will help you pick a new double glazing that is suitable for. They will use quality materials and will ensure that your windows are put in place properly to last for many years to be.

Condensation Between the Panes

Condensation occurs when warm air comes in contact with a cold surface. Water vapour in air condenses, forming liquid droplets. Condensation that forms on glass windows that are double-glazed can be easily wiped away. However, moisture that accumulates between the panes can cause mold to grow or even harm the glass.

Moisture that develops between the windows of your home could be caused by a variety of issues, such as temperature fluctuations, high humidity levels and damaged seals. Older windows are more vulnerable to this issue than ones with improved sealing technology.

It is important to note that while the formation of condensation on the glass of your window must not be ignored, this can be easily addressed without the need to replace the entire unit. In many instances this problem, it is caused by an issue with the gas seal or vacuum which is found around the inner and outer frames of your windows.

It can take from only a few minutes up to several days to remove all moisture. Once this is done the window can then be sealed and fitted with vents to let the windows naturally eliminate moisture and air.
